Gjeilo’s rich, consonant harmonies give the work a luminosity that completely wins over the listener (well, this one, anyway). The intent and the story in his Mass are expressed through the way in which the music comes across sonically. In so doing, he reveals a structure outside of the text: a journey from the heavens to Earth. While Gjeilo sets the meaning of the Latin text respectfully and observes the traditions that masses exhibit, his overall vision for the piece lies within the subtitles of the work. The text comes from the Ordinary of the Mass, and Gjeilo has provided a secondary title to each: Kyrie - The Spheres, Gloria - Sunrise, Credo - The City, and Sanctus & Agnus Dei - Identity & The Ground. Gjeilo approaches his craft from a spiritual perspective, and wants to share universal human experiences in the realm of his music.
